We present a novel unsupervised learning approach to image landmark discovery by incorporating the inter-subject landmark consistencies on facial images. This is achieved via an inter-subject mapping module that transforms original subject landmarks based on an auxiliary subject-related structure. To recover from the transformed images back to the original subject, the landmark detector is forced to learn spatial locations that contain the consistent semantic meanings both for the paired intra-subject images and between the paired inter-subject images. Our proposed method is extensively evaluated on two public facial image datasets (MAFL, AFLW) with various settings. Experimental results indicate that our method can extract the consistent landmarks for both datasets and achieve better performances compared to the previous state-of-the-art methods quantitatively and qualitatively.

ICPR 2020 is the premier international conference on Pattern Recognition, gathering leading researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in Pattern Analysis and Recognition, applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The topic of the year is " Putting Artificial intelligence to work on Patterns". 
For the first time, ICPR has employed a two-round review process similar to journal submissions, with new papers allowed to be submitted in either the first or second round and papers submitted in the first round and not accepted allowed to be revised and re-submitted for second round review.

This paper studies the problem of Person Re-Identification (ReID)
for large-scale applications. Recent research efforts have been devoted
to building complicated part models, which introduce considerably
high computational cost and memory consumption, inhibiting its practicability
in large-scale applications. This paper aims to develop a novel learning
strategy to find efficient feature embeddings while maintaining the
balance of accuracy and model complexity. More specifically, we find
by enhancing the classical triplet loss together with cross-entropy
loss, our method can explore the hard examples and build a discriminant
feature embedding yet compact enough for large-scale applications.
Our method is carried out progressively using Bayesian optimization,
and we call it the Progressive Learning Algorithm (PLA). Extensive
experiments on three large-scale datasets show that our PLA is comparable
or better than the state-of-the-arts. Especially, on the challenging
Market-1501 dataset, we achieve Rank-1=94.7%/mAP=89.4% while saving
at least 30\% parameters than strong part models.

Sparse Network Inversion for Key Instance Detection in Multiple Instance Learning

In a wide range of applied problems involving fluid flows, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) provides detailed quantitative information on the flow field, at variable level of fidelity and computational cost. However, CFD alone cannot predict high-level functional properties that are not easily obtained from the equations of fluid motion. In this work, we present a data-driven framework to extract these additional information, such as medical diagnostic output, from CFD solutions. This is a challenging task because of the huge data dimensionality of CFD, and the limited training data that can be typically gathered due to the large computational cost of CFD. By pursuing a traditional Machine Learning (ML) pipeline of pre-processing, feature extraction, and model training, we demonstrate that informative features can be extracted from CFD data. Two experiments, pertaining to different application domains, support our claim that the convective properties implicit into a CFD solution can be leveraged to retrieve functional information that does not admit an analytical definition. Despite the preliminary nature of our study and the relative simplicity of both the geometrical and CFD models, for the first time we demonstrate that the combination of ML and CFD can diagnose a complex system in terms of high-level functional properties.


Inferring Functional Properties from Fluid Dynamics Features

Electroencephalography (EEG) is the most used physiological measure to evaluate the cognitive state of a user efficiently. As EEG inherently suffers from a poor spatial resolution, features extracted from each EEG channel may not be efficiently used for the cognitive state assessment. In this paper, the EEG-based cognitive state assessment has been performed during the mental arithmetic experiment, which includes two cognitive states (task and rest) of a user. To obtain the temporal as well as the spatial resolution of the EEG signal, we combined the Filter Bank Common Spatial Pattern (FBCSP) method and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)-based deep ensemble model for classifying the cognitive state of a user. Subject-wise data distribution has been performed due to the execution of a large volume of data in a low computing environment. In the FBCSP method, the input EEG is decomposed into multiple equal-sized frequency bands, and spatial features of each frequency bands are extracted using the Common Spatial Pattern (CSP) algorithm. Next, a feature selection algorithm has been applied to identify the most informative features for classification. The proposed deep ensemble model consists of multiple similar structured LSTM networks that work in parallel. The output of the ensemble model (i.e., the cognitive state of a user) is computed using the average weighted combination of the individual model prediction. This proposed model achieves 87\% classification accuracy, and it can also effectively estimate the cognitive state of a user in a low computing environment.


EEG-Based Cognitive State Assessment Using DeepEnsemble Model and Filter Bank Common SpatialPattern

It becomes urgent to design effective anti-spoofing algorithms for vulnerable automatic speaker verification systems due to the advancement of high-quality playback devices. Current studies mainly treat anti-spoofing as a binary classification problem between bonafide and spoofed utterances, while lack of indistinguishable samples makes it difficult to train a robust spoofing detector. In this paper, we argue that for antispoofing, it needs more attention for indistinguishable samples over easily-classified ones in the modeling process, to make correct discrimination a top priority. Therefore, to mitigate the data discrepancy between training and inference, we propose to leverage a balanced focal loss function as the training objective to dynamically scale the loss based on the traits of the sample itself. Besides, in the experiments, we select three kinds of features that contain both magnitude-based and phase-based information to form complementary and informative features. Experimental results on the ASVspoof2019 dataset demonstrate the superiority of the proposed methods by comparison between our systems and top-performing ones. Systems trained with the balanced focal loss perform significantly better than conventional cross-entropy loss. With complementary features, our fusion system with only three kinds of features outperforms other systems containing five or more complex single models by 22.5% for min-tDCF and 7% for EER, achieving a min-tDCF and an EER of 0.0124 and 0.55% respectively. Furthermore, we present and discuss the evaluation results on real replay data apart from the simulated ASVspoof2019 data, indicating that research for anti-spoofing still has a long way to go.

Dynamically Mitigating Data Discrepancy with
Balanced Focal Loss for Replay Attack Detection


The current deep learning based visual tracking approaches have been very successful by learning the target classification and/or estimation model from a large amount of supervised training data in offline mode. However, most of them can still fail in tracking objects due to some more challenging issues such as dense distractor objects, confusing background, motion blurs, and so on. Inspired by the human “visual tracking” capability which leverages motion cues to distinguish the target from the background, we propose a TwoStream Residual Convolutional Network (TS-RCN) for visual tracking, which successfully exploits both appearance and motion features for model update. Our TS-RCN can be integrated with existing deep learning based visual trackers. To further improve the tracking performance, we adopt a “wider” residual network ResNeXt as its feature extraction backbone. To the best of our knowledge, TS-RCN is the first end-to-end trainable two-stream visual tracking system, which makes full use of both appearance and motion features of the target. We have extensively evaluated the TS-RCN on most widely used benchmark datasets including VOT2018, VOT2019, and GOT-10K. The experiment results have
successfully demonstrated that our two-stream model can greatly outperform the appearance-based tracker, and achieves state-ofthe-art performance. The tracking system can run at up to 38.1 FPS.

1155 - Robust Visual Object Tracking with Two-Stream Residual Convolutional Networks

Data-driven feature extraction is examined to realize accurate and robust calving detection. Automatic calving sign detection systems can support farmers' decision making. As large-scale, well-developed data cannot generally be assumed when establishing calving detection systems, the reasons for the prediction need to be presented to farmers during operation, so black-box modeling (also known as end-to-end modeling) is not appropriate. In this paper, neural networks are designed to extract information relevant to calving signs, which can be observed from video frames, such as the frequency in pre-calving postures, statistics in movement, and statistics in rotation. Experimental comparisons using surveillance videos of 15 cows demonstrate that the proposed feature extraction methods contribute to reducing false positives and explaining the basis of the prediction compared to the end-to-end calving detection system.

Feature Representation Learning for Calving Detection of Cows Using Video Frames

Although deeper and larger neural networks have achieved better performance, due to overwhelming burden on computation, they cannot meet the demands of deployment on resource-limited devices. An effective strategy to address this problem is to make use of dynamic inference mechanism, which changes the inference path for different samples at runtime. Existing methods only reduce the depth by skipping an entire specific layer, which may lose important information in this layer. In this paper, we propose a novel method called Dynamic Multi-path Neural Network (DMNN), which provides more topology choices in terms of both width and depth on the fly. For better modelling the inference path selection, we further introduce previous state and object category information to guide the training process. Compared to previous dynamic inference techniques, the proposed method is more flexible and easier to incorporate into most modern network architectures. Experimental results on ImageNet and CIFAR-100 demonstrate the superiority of our method on both efficiency and classification accuracy.

Dynamic Multi-path Neural Network


With the rapid growth of the scientific literature, manually selecting appropriate citations for a paper is becoming increasingly challenging and time-consuming. While several approaches for automated citation recommendation have been proposed in the recent years, effective document representations for citation recommendation are still elusive to a large extent. For this reason, in this paper we propose a novel approach to citation recommendation which leverages a deep sequential representation of the documents (Sentence-BERT) cascaded with Siamese and triplet networks in a submodular scoring function. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first approach to combine deep representations and submodular selection for a task of citation recommendation. Experiments have been carried out using a popular benchmark dataset -- the ACL Anthology Network corpus -- and evaluated against baselines and a state-of-the-art approach using metrics such as the MRR and F1@k score. The results show that the proposed approach has been able to outperform all the compared approaches in every measured metric.

Learning Neural Textual Representations for Citation Recommendation

Most Siamese network-based trackers perform the tracking process without model update, and cannot learn target-specific variation adaptively. Moreover, Siamese-based trackers infer the new state of tracked objects by generating axis-aligned bounding boxes, which contain extra background noise, and are unable to accurately estimate the rotation and scale transformation of moving objects, thus potentially reducing tracking performance. In this paper, we propose a novel Rotation-Scale Invariant Network (RSINet) to address the above problem. Our RSINet tracker consists of a target-distractor discrimination branch and a rotation-scale estimation branch, the rotation and scale knowledge can be explicitly learned by a multi-task learning method in an end-to-end manner. In addtion, the tracking model is adaptively optimized and updated under spatio-temporal energy control, which ensures model stability and reliability, as well as high tracking efficiency. Comprehensive experiments on OTB-100, VOT2018, and LaSOT benchmarks demonstrate that our proposed RSINet tracker yields new state-of-the-art performance compared with recent trackers, while running at real-time speed about 45 FPS.

RSINet: Rotation-Scale Invariant Network for Online Visual Tracking


Typically, loss functions, regularization mechanisms and other important aspects of training parametric models are chosen heuristically from a limited set of options. In this paper, we take the first step towards automating this process, with the view of producing models which train faster and more robustly. Concretely, we present a meta-learning method for learning parametric loss functions that can generalize across different tasks and model architectures. We develop a pipeline for meta-training such loss functions, targeted at maximizing the performance of the model trained under them. The loss landscape produced by our learned losses significantly improves upon the original task-specific losses in both supervised and reinforcement learning tasks. Furthermore, we show that our meta-learning framework is flexible enough to incorporate additional information at meta-train time. This information shapes the learned loss function such that the environment does not need to provide this information during meta-test time.
