Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is a widely used technique for dimensionality reduction in various problem domains, including data compression, image processing, visualization, exploratory data analysis, pattern recognition, time-series prediction, and machine learning. Often, data is presented in a correlated paired manner such that there exist observable and correlated unobservable measurements. Unfortunately, traditional PCA techniques generally fail to optimally capture the leverageable correlations between such paired data as it does not yield a maximally correlated basis between the observable and unobservable counterparts. This instead is the objective of Canonical Correlation Analysis (and the more general Partial Least Squares methods); however, such techniques are still symmetric in maximizing correlation (covariance for PLSR) over all choices of the basis for both datasets without differentiating between observable and unobservable variables (except for the regression phase of PLSR). Further, these methods deviate from PCA&#39;s formulation objective to minimize approximation error, seeking instead to maximize correlation or covariance. While these are sensible optimization objectives, they are not equivalent to error minimization. We therefore introduce a new method of leveraging PCA between paired datasets in a dependently coupled manner, which is optimal with respect to approximation error during training. We generate a dependently coupled paired basis for which we relax orthogonality constraints in decomposing unreliable unobservable measurements. In doing so, this allows us to optimally capture the variations of the observable data while conditionally minimizing the expected prediction error for the unobservable component. We show preliminary results that demonstrate improved learning of our proposed method compared to that of traditional techniques.

ICPR 2020 is the premier international conference on Pattern Recognition, gathering leading researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in Pattern Analysis and Recognition, applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The topic of the year is " Putting Artificial intelligence to work on Patterns". 
For the first time, ICPR has employed a two-round review process similar to journal submissions, with new papers allowed to be submitted in either the first or second round and papers submitted in the first round and not accepted allowed to be revised and re-submitted for second round review. 

In this edition of the **ICPR 2020** Conference, there are 1407 Oral/Poster presentations organized in five Tracks: 
- Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning for Pattern Analysis; 
- Biometrics, Human Analysis and Behavior Understanding; Computer Vision, Robotics and Intelligent Systems; 
- Document and Media Analysis; and 
- Image and Signal Processing. 

The **ICPR 2020** Main Conference program also includes 7 Keynotes from prominent world-renowned scientists, 8 Tutorials, 28 Demos, 8 Challenges, 2 Panels, as well as an Industry/Sponsor Exhibition. In addition, 41 Workshops on a range of important current and emerging research topics complete the ICPR 2020 program.

Predictive Coding Network (PCN) is an important neural network inspired by visual processing models in neuroscience. It combines the feedforward and feedback processing and has the architecture of recurrent neural networks (RNNs). This type of network is usually trained with backpropagation through time (BPTT). With infinite recurrent steps, PCN is a dynamic system. However, as one of the most important properties, stability is rarely studied in this type of network. Inspired by reservoir computing, we investigate the stability of hierarchical RNNs from the perspective of dynamic systems and propose a sufficient condition for their echo state property (ESP). Our study shows the global stability is determined by the stability of the local layers and the feedback between neighboring layers. Based on it, we further propose Weight Norm Supervision, a new algorithm that controls the stability of PCN dynamics by imposing different weight norm constraints on different parts of the network. We compare our approach with other training methods in terms of stability and prediction capability. The experiments show that our algorithm learns stable PCNs with a reliable prediction precision in the most effective and controllable way.

Learning Stable Deep Predictive Coding Networks with Weight Norm Supervision

Survival data is often collected in medical applications from a heterogeneous population of patients. While in the past, popular survival models focused on modeling the average effect of the covariates on survival outcomes, rapidly advancing sensing and information technologies have provided opportunities to further model the heterogeneity of the population as well as the non-linearity of the survival risk. With this motivation, we propose a new semi-parametric Bayesian Survival Rule List model in this paper. Our model derives a rule-based decision-making approach, while within the regime defined by each rule, survival risk is modelled via a Gaussian process latent variable model. Markov Chain Monte Carlo with a nested Laplace approximation on the Gaussian process posterior is used to search over the posterior of the rule lists efficiently. The use of ordered rule lists enables us to model heterogeneity while keeping the model complexity in check. Performance evaluations on a synthetic heterogeneous survival dataset and a real world sepsis survival dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our model.

GPSRL: Learning Semi-Parametric Bayesian Survival Rule Lists from Heterogeneous Patient Data


The ubiquity of smart speakers is increasing, with a growing number of households utilising these devices to make calls over the telephony network. As the technology is typically configured to retain the cellular phone number of the user, it presents challenges in applications where knowledge of the true call origin is required. There are a wide range of makes and models for these devices, as is the case with cell phones, and it is challenging to detect the general category as a smart speaker or cell, independent of the designated phone number. In this paper, we present an approach to differentiate between calls originating from smart speakers and ones from cellular devices using only the audio. We present a feature set that characterises the relevant acoustic information, such as the degree of reverberation and noise, to distinguish between these categories. When evaluated on a dataset spanning multiple models for each device category, as well as different modes-of-usage and microphone-speaker distances, the method yields an Equal Error Rate (EER) of 12.6%.

Detection of Calls From Smart Speaker Devices


This paper studies the problem of Person Re-Identification (ReID)
for large-scale applications. Recent research efforts have been devoted
to building complicated part models, which introduce considerably
high computational cost and memory consumption, inhibiting its practicability
in large-scale applications. This paper aims to develop a novel learning
strategy to find efficient feature embeddings while maintaining the
balance of accuracy and model complexity. More specifically, we find
by enhancing the classical triplet loss together with cross-entropy
loss, our method can explore the hard examples and build a discriminant
feature embedding yet compact enough for large-scale applications.
Our method is carried out progressively using Bayesian optimization,
and we call it the Progressive Learning Algorithm (PLA). Extensive
experiments on three large-scale datasets show that our PLA is comparable
or better than the state-of-the-arts. Especially, on the challenging
Market-1501 dataset, we achieve Rank-1=94.7%/mAP=89.4% while saving
at least 30\% parameters than strong part models.

Optimal Strategies For Comparing Covariates To Solve Matching Problems

The most existing studies in the facial age estimation assume training and test images are captured under similar shooting conditions. However, this is rarely valid in real-world applications, where training and test sets usually have different characteristics. In this paper, we advocate a cross-dataset protocol for age estimation benchmarking. In order to improve the cross-dataset age estimation performance, we mitigate the inherent bias caused by the learning algorithm itself.
To this end, we propose a novel loss function that is more effective for neural network training. The relative smoothness of the proposed loss function is its advantage with regards to the optimisation process performed by stochastic gradient descent (SGD). Compared with existing loss functions, the lower gradient of the proposed loss function leads to the convergence of SGD to a better optimum point, and consequently a better generalisation. The cross-dataset experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over the state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of accuracy and generalisation capability.

The key concept of our method "Adversarial Knowledge Distillation for generative models (AKDG)" is very simple but effective.
The key is the additional discriminator which judges a teacher or student.
We conduct the compression experiments on several datasets.
Our AKDG outperforms the conventional compression method for unconditional generative models in all experiments.

For 3D point cloud registration, how to improve the local feature correlation of two point clouds is a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a cascaded mutual information attention registration network. The network improves the accuracy of point cloud registration by stacking residual structure and using lateral connection.

Imbalance in the proportion of training samples belonging to different classes often poses performance degradation of conventional classifiers. This is primarily due to the tendency of the classifier to be biased towards the majority classes in the imbalanced dataset. In this paper, we propose a novel three step technique to address imbalanced data. As a first step we significantly oversample the minority class distribution by employing the traditional Synthetic Minority Oversampling
Technique (SMOTE) algorithm using the neighborhood of the minority class samples and in the next step we partition the generated samples using a Gaussian-Mixture Model based clustering algorithm. In the final step synthetic data samples are
chosen based on the weight associated with the cluster, the weight itself being determined by the distribution of the majority class samples. Extensive experiments on several standard datasets from diverse domains show the usefulness of the proposed technique in comparison with the original SMOTE and its state-of-the-art
variants algorithms.

A Novel Adaptive Minority Oversampling Technique for Improved Classification in Data Imbalanced Scenarios

For practical application scenes, the cosmetic contact lenses detection still facing unsolved problems, due to the low image quality and difficulty in accurately iris localization. We propose a novel framework called Weighted Region Network (WRN) to detect the cosmetic contact lenses. The WRN includes a local attention Weight Network and a global classification Region Network. With the inherent attention mechanism, the proposed network is able to find more discriminative regions, which reduces the requirement for target detection and improves the ability of classification.

Local Attention and Global Representation Collaborating for Fine-grained Classification

Mutual information (MI) is an information-theoretic measure of dependency between two random variables. Several methods to estimate MI, from samples of two random variables with unknown underlying probability distributions have been
proposed in the literature. Recent methods realize parametric probability distributions or critic as a neural network to approximate unknown density ratios. The approximated density ratios are used to estimate different variational lower bounds of MI. While these methods provide reliable estimation when the true MI is low, they produce high variance estimates in cases of high MI. We argue that the high variance characteristic is due to the uncontrolled complexity of the critic's hypothesis space. In support of this argument, we use the data-driven Rademacher complexity of the hypothesis space associated with the critic's architecture to analyse generalization error bound of variational lower bound estimates of MI. In the proposed work, we show that it is possible to negate the high variance characteristics of these estimators by constraining the critic's hypothesis space to Reproducing Hilbert Kernel Space (RKHS), which corresponds to a kernel learned using Automated Spectral Kernel Learning (ASKL). By analysing the aforementioned generalization error bounds, we augment the overall optimisation objective with effective regularisation term. We empirically demonstrate the efficacy of this regularization in enforcing proper bias variance tradeoff on four variational lower bounds, namely NWJ, MINE, JS and SMILE.
