A new chapter for Underline

When we founded Underline in 2019, we set out to do one thing well: help scholarly organizations deliver outstanding event experiences, and make sure the ideas shared at those events could travel beyond the walls of the venue. A conference is one of the most valuable things a research community does all year - it's where people meet, where ideas collide, and where new directions take shape. Our job has been to capture that, preserve it, and extend its reach.

Today I'm delighted to share that Underline has become part of Annual Reviews.

For those who don't know them, Annual Reviews is a nonprofit organization that has spent decades synthesizing and integrating knowledge for the progress of science and the benefit of society. They publish the review journals many researchers rely on, bring people together through the Charleston Conference, and reach wider audiences through Knowable Magazine, Katina Magazine, and Knowledge Unlatched. What they've built, more than anything, is trust - long-established ties to scholarly communities and a genuine understanding of how research moves.

That's why this feels like the right home. We were ready for the next phase of our development and had been exploring our options, and what stood out was the strength of the fit: a shared commitment to serving scholarly communities, and a shared belief that the conversations happening at conferences deserve to last. Joining Annual Reviews lets our work have greater impact through an organization built for exactly that.

Here's what I most want our clients to know: the Underline team and our operations remain in place. The people you work with, and the service you rely on, continue. What changes is what sits behind us - the reach, the relationships, and the mission of an organization that has served research communities for decades.

I'm especially excited about what becomes possible when live scholarly conversation connects with enduring knowledge stewards. Because the conference content we host carries DOIs, it can become part of the scholarly record - citable, discoverable, and useful to a field long after an event ends. A talk given once can keep informing the people who couldn't be in the room. That's the future we've always been working toward, and now we're better placed to build it.
